Chapter 9

Hanging in There

"What are we waiting for?" Joe whispered impatiently. "Let's get going!"

The Hardys finished their lunch quickly. As soon as they could politely leave, they excused themselves. On the way out, Frank said to Steve, "Would you mind showing us that guidebook you said you had in your office?"

"Sure," the lodge owner said. He put down his napkin, got up, and followed Frank and Joe out of the dining room.

Frank told Steve about the map he had found in the tool shed. "We have to get over to Moose Jaw Ridge as quickly as possible," Frank said. "Can you suggest the best way to do that?"

Steve nodded. "So you think there's something fishy about the Three B's?" he asked.

"Maybe," Joe said. "Or maybe it's a coincidence that they decided to go there."

"In any case, there's only one way to find out," Frank continued. "And that's for us to head there ourselves."

Steve led them to his office.

"There's no real road from here." He pointed to the map on the wall behind his desk. "But we did mark a trail with strips of yellow plastic ribbons a few months back — or rather, Willy did. You could follow that."

The Hardys thanked Steve and headed for their cabin to prepare for the hike.

"Are you ready, Joe?" asked Frank, tying up his wilderness boots.

"Ready as I'll ever be," Joe told him as he adjusted a small backpack onto his shoulders.

The brothers wound scarves around their necks, slid into their down jackets, and left the cabin.

Steve caught up with them at the point where the trail from their cabin met the main path. "I marked the way to the beginning of our trail," he said. "Stay to the right of the yellow ribbons when you reach them." He called out after the brothers as they rushed off, "And watch out for frozen patches. There could be deep water under thin ice!"

Following the map Willy had given them earlier, the Hardys had an easy enough time finding the beginning of the marked trail. As they slogged through the underbrush, they kept an eye open for the yellow ribbons. They weren't that hard to follow. Willy had done a good job marking the trail.

"Willy sure knows these woods well," Frank said, as they trudged along. "Steve's lucky to have him working at the lodge. Now I feel a little guilty for suspecting him of doing anything."

"The forest is really beautiful, isn't it?" said Joe, glancing at the pines and hemlocks towering above them. Rays of sunlight shot down between the trees.

"That's weird," Frank said suddenly.

"What is?" asked Joe.

"Suddenly I don't see any yellow ribbons anywhere," Frank replied. "They just sort of stop."

Joe looked around. "You're right," he said. "I don't see any, either. So where do we go now?"

"Let's see if we can pick up any kind of a trail," Frank suggested. He glanced around. "It looks a little clearer over there, to the left."

They worked their way through the thick woods toward the clearing. When they got there, they saw that the clearing was covered with a pile of branches.
